Max? Max! MAX!

I realized, as Maxfield was playing in the kids-play-area at the mall, how important it is to like your child’s name.

I must have said his name 100 times over the span of 30 minutes.

"Max, you have to share."
"Maxfield, you can’t push."
"Max you can’t jump from the….Okay I guess you can."
"Max, you have to wait your turn."
"Maxfield, you need to hold my hand."
"Max, don’t lick the stairs."
"Max, be gentle."
"Max, Where’s your mother?"

And so on.

I still like the name.

I can't tell you how many times I've uttered the phrase "Princess, get your mouth OFF of that!!"

Amazinly enough, by the time I was 8-years-old, I had both of my kids' names picked. I never picked more than two, weird huh? Anyhoo, when I was all knocked up with nowhere to go, I tried yelling the name out the window, knowing there would be years of doing that once the child was older. That was when I knew the names I picked all those years ago were good ones. I loved yelling those names, and still do. Haha! And that is how you pick a good baby name!
Your post reminded me of the Bill Cosby skit, "My name is Jeffery I 4-years-old." "Jeffery, come here. Here, here, Jeffery." Hahaha!

you only have one child now (I think) but wait until you have more than one, and go through the whole list, before you hit his or her name.....my kids really got mad at me when I would add in the dogs name Pierre......and I was young then......

I can't wait to have kids and say

Xavier (we plan to call him X for short)
Vexia
Zeke
Lola
Myles

over and over and over and over again.

I plan to have a total of 12 kids and yes, I already have the names picked out.

It always takes me at least 2 weeks to come up with a pet's name. When we have kids I'm afraid they will be nameless until their first birthday!

Somewhere I heard that you should test a name by making sure it suonds okay when you use it to introduce your baby, your teen, and the president.

Some experience has taught me that it should be easy to yell in times of trouble, as you described. Also, the shorter the name, the more yyou save on lettering sports jerseys for soccer, football, etc.

You realize you like your kids names which is good cause you say it so often, and on the other side you hate your own name, cause how often your wife says it.

John, put out the trash.
John, pay attention to the boys.
John, change his diaper.
John, empty the dishwasher.
John, go get milk.
John, get off of me.
John, I have a headache.

I hate the name John

That is funny John.

That IS funny John!! You have the same name as my brother and when we were younger (he's 4 years younger than I am), I just called him "Toilet" since it was the same thing ;-)

Max is a cool name, I agree William. Maxfield sounds royal (will work well when he needs to be taken seriously) and Max sounds like a cool guys name.

You and Lauren picked good!

Oh my God. I have said the "Liam don't lick/bite the ____ " more than I ever dreamed I would pre-child. I agree. Liking the name makes you less likely to smash your head against a wall after saying it 450x. Note I said LESS likely, not that it wouldn't happen.

And ohmygod John the LawnWhisperer please get a blog already. You are a RIOT!

I'd juxtapose it when I got bored if I were you -- call 'im "Field Max" just for fun.

And John, THAT was freakin' hysterical!

You've only just begun.

Pretty soon, you'll yell, "Max, xxxxxx," and then under your breath will be a, "little shit."

Mark my words.

"Max you can't jump off the...oh I guess you can"...that cracked me up!

Very important to like the name--I heard that a good test of a name is to stand on the back porch and shout it at the top of your lungs a couple of times--if you still like it, go for it! ;)

I like the idea of field testing... :)

Both the post and John's mini post are hilarious (I totally agree, get a blog already!). My hub and I never use each other's names though. He says my name like maybe two or three times a year. It startles me when he does... totally gets my attention. Maybe I should do that with the kids so that they'd pay more attention when I do call their name? Or maybe I should just start using the middle name more. :)

Too true! I am now guilty of doing what my parent's did....going thru the whole list of names before landing on the right one! I am still happy with the kid's names, even after saying them a least a million times in various tones! LOL

Too funny John!

My sister has four daughters. After going through the whole list, she would turn to her husband and say, "Now, what did we name that one?!"... Even when they're names you love, they can be hard to remember at times.

I love my kid's name but I can't get over how many people call him Ethan instead of Nathan or Nat instead of Nate. Never would have anticipated that.

And now you know why parents get kids' names mixed up. We've spent years correcting, advising, and admonishing "Punkin", that when Sweet Pea comes along, the very first thing we say is "Punkin, please stop that." when we really mean "Sweet Pea." And poor Buddy... depending on the 'gravity' of the situation, we start making names up and throwing them in there, and finally end with "YOU! COME HERE!" :)

You know, it just occurred to me. George Foreman may be on to something...

That reminds of before I gave birth.. I shouted Emily's name about 20 times including her middle one to see if I got tired of it by then... Too Funny... You have to make sure you like the first and middle names so that it runs well together as you're yelling it over and over again... very important! LOL

Whoa...I don't remember licking the stairs when I was a kid. Maybe that's a good thing.

Great blog!
