Max or Damien?

A few days ago I was having a conversation with our babysitter's dad about how difficult it is to get into the Christmas spirit when it is 75 degrees outside. Yesterday he stopped by with an invitation to join him and his family at their church's Christmas Pageant/Concert. He said the choir and music would help put us in the spirit of the holidays. He also told us they have a pretty good "drama-squad" that puts on a decent show. Christmas carols and drama sounded like fun so we met them at the church. The show was an interesting mix of a holiday and religious songs performed by the choir and basic story line that the "drama squad" acted out in intermittent vignettes, about the meaning of Christmas.

Lauren and I were concerned with how long Maxfield was going to last before he would throw a fit, but much to our surprise he was very well behaved. We kept him entertained with toys and juice and crackers and Pepperidge Farm Goldfish. He also enjoyed the music and singing. We did not hear a peep out him and were very proud of his behavior.

About half way through the show, the actors on stage were asking “Aunt Belle” about the meaning of Christmas. It was at this point that Max decided to speak.

There was not a sound in the church besides the actors speaking.

(I am paraphrasing some of the dialogue. )

Kid 1: Why do we celebrate Christmas?
Aunt Belle: Well, do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God?

MAX: NO!

Aunt Belle: And that he was sent here to help us?

MAX: Na na, NO.

Aunt Belle: Do you know how they say he was the King of Kings?

MAX: NO no no.

Aunt Belle: And that he died for our sins.

MAX: No.

I looked around to see if anyone was looking at us but no one was. I glanced at Lauren and could see her holding back the “church giggles” and in an effort to stifle my chuckles, I shoved a fistful of Goldfish into my mouth.

Maxfield did not say anything else after that. He was a perfect angel. Or devil?

I need to keep my eye on him.

Uh oh (sprinkling Holy water on the screen). I love Christmas pageants. I think even if I didn't have a kid in one, I'd want to go somewhere to see one. Maybe Max isn't a demon. Let's see, how could we reframe this . . . OK, he was taking exception to the way the scene was going. He wanted to direct, and was saying, "No, no, you've got it all wrong! We need GOLDFISH in this scene!"

Too funny! I'm sure he's just Max, not Damien. Keep an eye on him, though. :)

How hysterically funny. My brother, named Max, was the same way. We're Preacher's Kids BTW. Maybe it comes with the name? He grew out of it. I think. Well, sort of anyway.

If I ever have a kid, I hope he is just like Max. That "NO" thing? AWESOME. :)

I also love the fact that you stuffed your face with goldfish crackers to keep from laughing. Classic.

Hi - I found your blog by accident one day, and saved it in my favorites file so I could read it periodically. It is very enjoyable.
I am about 20 miles south of Philadephia.
I just read your post about cutting the grass and it was 79 degrees and I thought you'd like to know THE WEATHERMAN SAYS 3 to 6 INCHES OF SNOW TONIGHT.

Perhaps you should move back up here.

Christmas mood, here we come!

If it weren't for a bout of the giggles it would have been a long night LOL! well, i'm thinking more along the lines of midnight mass on Christmas eve...waiting for santa to arrive. Gosh we got a lot of the giggles... prolly from candy cane highs and lack of sleep.
Great blog

We are parents and now grandparents and I've used and seen used almost everything to keep the little ones quiet, Goldfish, Cheerios, a large cork - we didn't actually use that last one, just felt like it. :)

Small kids in church are always an adventure. ec

Oooh, oooh... did you go see the "Singing Trees" down at the big ol' Baptist Church off of I-4 on the way to Kissimmee? We used to call it "Baptist World" in the theme of all great Orlando destinations. Of course, we called them the "Screaming Trees" too, after the grunge band by that name, because we're strange and it cracked us up to think of the Screaming Trees playing at Baptist World. *sigh* I obviously need a life...

teehee--I'm sure you two weren't the only ones there with the church giggles!

Once I was sitting at church and a big black crow started pecking at one of the stained glass windows during a hymn. When the singing was over, it stopped, but then, right in the middle of the sermon (about the devil or something oddly appropriate like that) it started again and wouldn't stop "Tap, tap, tap, tap" I thought he was going to break through the glass! The Pastor even stopped for a minute to comment on the bird. It happened a couple Sundays in a row too--the weirdest thing!

is "No" Max's favourite word?

That is just a cute memory to add to you memory bank.....I have one, when my son was in the third grade he was ask to serve Christmas Eve Mass as an Alter boy....He followed the priest so closely, that the priest stopped and Joey ran into him, and dropped the bell...ringy dingy....and the little lunch lady sat behind us, leaned forward, tapping me on my shoulder and said "did you see what your son did?" Well it was hard not to...... It was a Hungarian Church, with a lot of little Hungarian ladies, that were very serious.....We aren't even Catholic....but it was a great memory......

That's hysterical! I am trying to decide what to do with Nathan during my church's Christmas concert on Friday night. It starts at 7 so it won't be over till after his bedtime so I think wishful thoughts of good behavior are remote. But he loves music, so ya never know. I suppose I should work on getting a babysitter.
