Generation Gap

I am only 4 years older than my wife. Sometimes, though, she makes me feel like I am 10 to 15 years older than her.

When Lauren was making the kid's Halloween costumes she had to dye a jacket blue for Wyatt. A pair of my white socks accidentally got ran through the wash with the jacket. The dyed jacket, of course, bled, and my socks ended up a nice shade of purple.

The other day, I decided to wear my new colored socks. Why? Because I really don't care what is on my feet, I mean no one looks at a guy's socks, do they? Besides their wife that is.

I was sitting across from Lauren while I was putting on the socks. I expected her to same something about the purple socks because she notices every time I wear mismatched socks that she would not miss the purple socks.

To beat her to her smart ass comment I said, "Yes. I am wearing Donny Osmond socks today."

"What?" she asked.

"I am wearing my Donny Osmond socks."

"What does that mean?" She said looking at me like I was speaking another language.

"Donny Osmond? Purple socks?"

She gave me a blank stare. "What are you talking about?"

"You really don't know what I am talking about? You never watched Donny and Marie?"

"Uhmmm. No."

"You are only 4 years younger than me. How can we be from two different generations?" I was in disbelief.

"I don't think generation has anything to do with watching the Osmonds."

I think you watch what your family does. I watched D&M as well as Lawrence Welk. Boy does that date me!! hahah! I bet those socks looked fabulous on you! ha! Now the part about being from a different generation is something my hubby would have come up with when I told him that I wanted Barry Manilow tickets for my birthday. He never let me live that down! What can I say, I have a varied taste in everything!

I'm 31 & NEVER watched Donnie & Marie! And just to make you feel a little older, my mom grew up watching & adoring Donnie Osmond! (But in your defense, my mom won't be 50 until January!)

I will be 37 at the end of the month and I used to watch D&M. My hubby is less than a year younger than me and there are things that he has no clue about.

Now I feel old. I HAD an official pair of purple Donny Osmond socks. Of course I remember watching Tony Orlando and Dawn and Sonny and Cher too. Don't know what to say about that.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that Donnie wasn't really even a little bit rock and roll, even though he was supposed to be the rocker of the two.

And for that matter, Marie wasn't that country either. But I did LOVE their show growing up.

(You would think that was a clear precursor of what life would be like.)

I know about Donny Socks. Does that mean I'm in your generation???

yeah, where was she living in a cave?

Hello, Donny and Marie, Lauren!

I'm pretty close to Lauren's age, right? Never saw Donny and Marie. Didn't know they existed until a few years ago. I'm guessing it also has to do with you having older siblings.

Four years can be a lot if the older person in the couple is a youngest and the younger person in the couple is the eldest in their family of origin.

My husband is 6 years older than me (he was born in the 60's, I was born in the 70's) and I don't know that either one of us grew up watching D&M. Well, maybe he did and I just don't know it but I sure didn't. But then I watched what my parents watched and I guess they didn't like D&M.

Didn't the show go off the air in 1978 . . . when Lauren was like 4?

I have to agree with your wife on this one.

Thanks for reminding me...I had a Donny & Marie lunch box when I was really young.

I had the Donnie and Marie dolls with the jesus holes for the their microphones. No, actually scratch that. I had Donnie and my best friend had Marie and we had to play together to perform from the show.

P.S. I am 38.

I admit I didn't remember the purple socks, but at age 42 I definitely remember "I'm a little bit country, and I'm a little bit rock'n'roll." HA!

Maybe I'm closer to your "generation" than Lauren's but I definitely caught on to the Donny-socks comment. Especially because they're STILL IN THE NEWS.

RETIRE ALREADY! DAMMIT YOU OSMONDS!

I loathe the Osmonds as much as you loathe IKEA, I bet. (My sister was the one who linked your IKEA post to hers, BTW.)

She does have a point there.

I think she's got a point. But you're right - sometimes four years is longer than you'd think.

You should've broken out a little Billy Don't Be a Hero for her... Or I'm a Little Bit Country, I'm a Little Bit Rock and Roll

No clue about the purple socks. I did see him once in London, at a bookstore. People over there freaking LOVE him.

Pop culture moves so fast these days that you can be completely unaware if your window, so to speak, is shifted by as little as a year or two.

I was two years younger than my next-oldest sibling, and to this day I'm amazed at how his experiences varied from mine.

And FWIW, purple socks rock. As long as they feel good on your feet, I always say!

I had the dolls. I went to the concert at Valley Forge for my 8th, 9th, or 10th birthday with my dad. Best Dad date ever. A few weeks ago I even watched the reunion concert dvd from the library. I am so nostalgic! I keep trying to convince my daughter that in a year or two Hannah Montana will disappear but maybe I have to rethink that since she seems to be her generations Donnie & Marie.
