Crime and Punishment

Maxfield has a habit of throwing his food. When he is full, he likes to take the remaining food and throw it on the floor. Lauren and I have been trying to break him of this habit and have been putting him in Time Out every time he does it. He used to put up a fight, and go to the time out step screaming and kicking.

Last night Max threw his food again. Lauren looked at him and asked, “Max, did you just throw your food?”

Max smiled and said, “No.”

“Are you lying to me?” Lauren asked in a way that only a mother could ask.

“Yes.”

Lauren stood up, fighting a laugh, and told him he would have to go into Time Out. She un-strapped him from his booster seat and he hopped down and walked right over to the Time Out step. He sat for a few minutes until Lauren had talk with him. Once Lauren lifted the Time Out he walked into the kitchen and said, “Sorry Daddy.”

“What are you sorry for, Max?” I said.

“Throw food.”

I don’t know what made me happier; the fact that he went to Time Out without a fuss or the fact that he actually “GOT IT” in regards to what his crime was.

that's an interesting way of letting your parents know you're done eating.

he sounds like a good kid, I'm sure he'll get it sooner rather than later.

Don't you hate when they're "in trouble" and it's all you can do not to laugh because they're so darn cute??

He sounds like such a sweetie.

Hearing a child sincerely apologize melts my heart.

Yeah, you gotta watch them, though. My daughter will often go through the whole "take a time out and say she's sorry for doing X" routine because it's just that --a routine. Then she'd go right back to doing whatever it was she just apologized for. She's also developed the habit of saying "I underhaand" ("I understand") even before I've asked her if she understands what I'm telling her not to do. Sometimes before I even tell her ANYTHING.

You mean you get the opportunity for a food fight every night, and you don't?

Go Max! Go Bill and Lauren!

The question is---did he do it again?

I always hated disciplining my kids. I still do.

But ya gotta, or they'll plaster ketchup all over your walls. Making it look like a crime scene.

Hunh. Mine has started to begin her fits yelling, "I don't wanna talk!" (as in, have a talk about her transgression!)

It's better to listen to mom than have to face nanny Jo from the tv show the nanny.....lol

My daughter put Christopher, when he was the same age as Max, into a corner because he wouldn't pick up his toys.....she told him when he was ready to pick them up, he could get out of the corner....so he after a few minutes went and started to pick up the toys.....and before he ever finished she looked and he was back in the corner......decided he like that better than picking up the toys.....hummmmm

My kid has started doing that too! It's very irritating. But at least the dog is there to catch it all. I've missed reading your blog. Glad I'm getting caught up.

I always throw my food on the floor when I'm full, too.
