The Great Debate

I need a little help here.
This Great Debate has been ongoing for over 25 years. I would like to settle it by using the opinions of the people that read Poop and Boogies for a little closure on the topic. Since I think the people who comment here can be objective in their opinion I will rely on you to solve this dispute.

If you were, say, 10 or 11 years old back in the early 80’s (remember think like a 10 year old BOY) . Who was cooler (less nerdy, less dorky), which was the better talent to be a big fan of:

Barry Manilow or Andy Gibb.

Thinking like a boy? Hmmm I would have to say Andy Gibb. Although, I loved Barry Manilow. But Andy wore spandex pants and did drugs...not a good role model. Barry-he wore a pineapple on his head for Copacabana though too.
Man that's a toughie....
I'm gonna say Barry Manilow. Final answer.

Andy Gibb. BUT... all Andy fans were closet Barry fans. Barry fans remain hidden in the closet to this day because that was our parents' music, but man was he the bestest! (I mean, I think that's how a closet Barry fan might feel.)
Have a great weekend!

Yep, for "cool," gotta go with Andy Gibb. Barry Manilow is the Anti-Cool.

You know, I had to whip this out at Kristine's not long ago:

For so long, you and me been findin' each other for so long . . .

If you give a little more than you're asking for, your love will turn the key . . .
You should quote this at Kristine's, she'll LOVE you for it :)

Barry Manilow? Ewww. You might as well like Lawrence Welk.

Uh ok..If I were a 10yr old boy I would have to like Andy Gibb out loud even if I did like Barry Manilow better sectretly because if I liked Barry Manilow out loud, I would get beat up. However, since I am a 36yr old girl, I get to like Barry Manilow out loud and only my husband gives me funny looks as I croon along to Mandy..Stacie

Hm. What choices! Would you admit either? I guess Andy Gibb. Reluctantly. Man, why not Styx or REO Speedwagon? I guess at least you didn't say Air Supply.

Andy Gibb, but I'm totally with Susie.

SO I'm 10 right. So what team did Andy and Barry pitch for anyway? Ew they probably both like girls or boys or boys and girls, giggle, giggle, giggle. My sister thinks that Andy is so cool, she has his poster over her bed. My Mom likes Barry (yecch). My dad says he like Lawrence Welk. Oh well gotta go play stickball.

I don't know about the boys, but from a girl's perspective, Andy Gibb was so hot... but we all liked Barry's music better. Andy to look at, Barry to listen to.

This has nothing to do with talent, william. (For boys, that is.) Any boy listening to either of these singers was certainly girly.

A boy that age could get away with listening to Andy Gibb then, but ONLY IF done in the attempt to get a girl's attention. (Even then, too much enjoyment of it wouldn't be wise.) Otherwise it would totally turn off the girls (and he wuold probably get beaten up by the boys... and maybe even the girls, too).

Ummmm...well....I was born in the 80's....so...I'd have to say, Andy who?....I guess Barry Manilow...I've heard of him.

Andy Gibb.... Good LORD!! Barry Manilow, NO WAY!!

Andy Gibb. Still.

Andy Gibb. Not my fav, but for a (then) 10 year old boy, a much "safer" choice.

Hey are you guys in any danger with Wilma coming to town? Hope all is well!

Um, who is Andy Gibb? Wait, I don't think I meet the age requirements for this post. Er...sorry.

(Oh wait! I know Barry Gibb! They make fun of him on SNL! Is Andy his brother? You're laughing at me, aren't you?)

Nico said...

I don't know them (just heard a little about Barry Manilow). I'm an 85's boy! So I think I can say I'm with Kalki here.
But...do 10-11 year old boys listen to this kind of music, anyways??

What??? Did you lose a bet here with that crafty Lauren?

Foreigner, Journey, .38 Special ... sure. But the BEE-effing-Gees or Barely Manenough?? Survey says? ***Buzzer***

I'm depressed now that I've read comments by people who weren't even BORN when Andy or Barry were huge. I though, remember them well, and I'm thinking that Andy would be the way to go. Seems boys would rather imitate someone who was a sex symbol (albeit effeminate, but hey) and huge with the younger audience, than the guy with the pineapple on his head. Just saying.

I'm with Allison...Any was a teen heartthrob, Barry...not so much

We think Andy Gibb is the cooler of the two, but it's a tough question!

Andy Gibb, although now that I think about it I believe his looks must have been the inspiration for George Michael. Am I on to something?

I'd have to say Andy Gibb, that would have to make you look cooler with the girls. Oh the memories of standing on my bed, belting out Mandy! LOL

Just to let everyone in on a little secret, it was Barry Manilow for Bill as a young lad. Ask him, he still knows the words to "I can't smile without you."

Tammy said...

Andy Gibb.

Barry was singing for the other team, if you know what I mean.

Charlotte in Pa said...

Barry was clearly a more talented songwriter (after all, he writes the songs that make the whole world sing), but Andy was cooler. Remember when he did that duet with Victoria Principal? I almost believed he was straight...

I have to say, as a 10 year old back then I would have picked Andy Gibb....but as a boy I don't know....I'm curious as to why you want to know.....

are the gibbs the beegees? if so, my answer is andy gibb. if not, then my answer is still andy gibb.

You'd have gotten yer ass kicked for either on my playground. Gibb had more cred for drugs and dying and stuff.

Since I've never heard of Andy Gibb, I'd have to say Barry Manilow....sorry--I guess I'm too young! ;) (just read through some of the comments--I'm not THAT young, but I just never heard of Andy Gibb--my hubby would tell me about him...)
