Christmas Debate

There is an argument about to happen in my house. It is the type of argument that could put a serious strain on the harmony of the household. This disagreement can carry and produce as much venom and animosity as any political topic; such as the right to bear arms or separation of church and state. You wanna see a house divided? Health Care Bill, meh, nothing compared to what is going to happen this weekend.

This weekend is the weekend where we typically hang our Christmas Lights. We have the argument every year. One of us likes the house to be decorated in only white lights. One of us prefers the house to be lit in the multi colored twinkle lights.

What do you prefer?

Also, I was given a copy of the new Curious George A Very Monkey Christmas to review. The show's broadcast premiere is on November 25th on PBS Kids (check local listings). I sat down with Maxfield and Wyatt to watch it and, well, it is a Curious George Christmas special. It is cute. Wyatt, who is three, liked it better than Max who is five. They both only asked to watch it one more time, which as far as movies or television shows go is only like a 2 out of 4 stars.

Def multi colored twinkle lights. If your going to decorate then go all out

White lights are in no way festive. If they are meant to be Christmas decorations then the lights should be multi-colored. Glad to know mine is not the only household that has this discussion/argument every year.

p.s. Thanks for the blog I love it and read it every day.

I go back and forth...there is something pretty sweet about the old school, multi-color lights...but there is something very classy about the white only.

Just hang blue. That will solve it.

I grew up with multi but prefer white in my house. I hate when the colors don't match right... to ease my freakish ocd... white lights.

We don't rim the house with lights...we have a white light reindeer set and small porch fake 3ft trees. All white.

This year I'm angling for a sparkly grapevine snowman.

I like multi colored lights for inside and out. I also like the white icicle lights that hang from the roof.

wHITE LIGHTS ARE BEAUTIFUL- COLORED LIGHTS ARE FESTIVE---- AS LONG AS YOU GET RID OF THAT WICKER REINDEER EITHER WILL BE GOOD JUST KIDDING---HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND YOURS!!!!

HAH!! BOTH!!
We have traditionally trimmmed the house in white icicle lites then the shrubs in colored twinkle lights and a GINORMOUS wreath that has colored lights and a big bow.
It's a nice compromise. It also looks very pretty. We do have to restrain our inner "Clark Griswald"
Happy Thanksgiving!

When multi-colored Christmas lights were the norm, I was a fan of white. Now that white seems to be more popular, I'm itching for some classic multi-colored. What do the kids think?

We do a combo as well...the house is trimmed with white mini lights while the yard, trees and rose bushes are all adorned with the colored mini lights.

Now see this was our agreement AFTER the dreaded, horrible argument that went something like one of us whining that we wanted mini lights while the other wanted the HUGE Old Fashion type bulb lights....

This years heated discussion will be which boy gets the lump of coal... as they are both worthy

We have the same argument in our house. I love white solid lights. I think they just look bright and happy ... and neat. My husband is all about the blinking multi-colored craziness. Our compromise: nothing blinking 'cause I swear they make me crazy, but we do a color "theme" of blue, white, and green lights. We also add a few of the holographic light boards -- nothing over the top. Keeps us from having the same argument every year!

White twinkle lights. So pretty.

No way, the white lights go outside, the multicolor (not twinkly either) go inside on the tree.

White on the tree (the ornaments are colorful enough) so the colored lights go outside, where all manner of mish-mash decor ends up: white plastic stars lined with white twinkle lights (the only twinkle I can handle, period), netting over a single shrub, twirls of fading color lights running up the cedar shrubs, and as many lights as I can convince my husband to put on the roof!

I've been boxing up my (future grandma) supply of children's books. I saved 2 Curious George books and gave the other CG's away. My baby is 10, so it was time.

White lights for the inside tree, multi (non-twinkle) for the outside. Basically do it big and noisy on the outside and calm on the inside, because I have a three year old boy which means we have enough things that are colorful and blink in the house.

We used to have this argument every year and we finally came to an agreement -- White lights outside and colored lights on the tree.

William, I am still always mortified to see "William" in my comments section. EAK! I forget that you are "out there". I am blushing to think a man would read my "mushy" posts - I don't even tell my husband about them! I have just spent the last minutes reading all of the posts that I have missed. You make me laugh, William, a true test of a great guy! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your sweet family! E

White or multicolored (although I think the white are more elegant), I don't really care, but just stop the blinking. STOP the twinkling. It makes my head hurt.

the rest of my house and life with children is a mess. i prefer my christmas decor to be controlled. i have a 'tree in a box' decorating set for the tree in the living room. white lights, all gold and burgandy bulbs and decorations. we put out three white light fake tree thingies in the front yard, with white net lights on the bushes. all nice and white and controlled by me. ah.

I lifted my response from an old blog post of mine: "Colored. I am a colored-light girl. One, for the nostalgia factor, and two, for the fact that I have clear lights all over my house every day of the year. It’s the colors that say, PARTAY!"'

I love MULTI for all, tree and outside lights! Although, this year, the outside is white! All my multi lights have had it. The whites are left from the year I did red, white and blue in memory of Jeff. Last Christmas I did blue, because I was having a Blue Christmas. Who knows what it'll be next Chritmas? But my choice always is MULTI! The brighter the better. Compromise! Do a little multi here and a little white there. Bet it will look great! Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

Sadly, this is a problem I don't have being a Jew.

I think all white looks great if you outline the house or surround the trunk of a tree. Otherwise, go color.

Either way, I will stop and stare at your house. Cause I love Christmas lights.

ONLY white lights for me. But then, I'm a total Scrooge.

I tend to fall into the single color camp. I don't care what that single color is, but oh, do I love me some uniformity.

Our main tree is white lights with mommy's fragile ornaments. Then for the boys, we put up a smaller "family" tree, with multi colored lights and handmade ornaments. The kids love the family tree, b/c they get to decorate it and mommy gets to keep her sanity!

We did all white lights for years, but tossed in some colored ones last year. I liked the change.

The argument at our house is over who has to put the lights up!
I thought I liked the twinkling variety until it felt like it needed a strobe effect health warning. All that frenetic blinking drove me right bonkers!
I love both clear and coloured lights but I think the coloured lights are more festive at Christmas. Clear lights are over used now, like in a Nora Ephron movie.

We havd had this argument and the argument over fake or real tree.

Its been a real one for 9 years until last year when I could not find the stand, so i went out and bought a fake tree.

This will be a great year, just going down the basement to get the tree.

I like the white lights because they are pure and uniform, but.... I can also stare and appreciate the different colored lights for hours. Yah, I know, no help from me...

We have the same argument in our house every year. We finally compromised, white lights on the house outside, colored on the tree and inside. I prefer the colored lights...white bores me to tears, but DH likes the white lights. I'd like to know that somewhere in the world someone out there won the colored light fight...
