Dear Visitors of the Morse Museum

The Morse Museum has a strict “No Stroller” policy. Although they offer the services of their own strollers they do not want you to bring your kids in their own strollers. So the double stroller that you may bring to keep both of your children in check as you try to admire the incredible leaded glass artwork of Louis Comfort Tiffany, will not be allowed into the museum.

Also they do not allow any photography. So if you have a child whose name is inspired by Maxfield Parrish, the masterful illustrator of the early 20th century, and you want to take a picture of your child in front of one of Parrish’s originals paintings that hangs in a gallery, they will prohibit you from doing so. Or if you have a child, with the middle name of Blue which is also inspired by the artist Parrish, who is renowned for his use of blues, which the phrase Parrish Blue comes from, and you want to take a picture of your child in front of one of Parrish’s original paintings that exemplifies his use of blue, they will also not allow that.

The security guards were very nice and helpful and they make sure to give you the hairy eyeball any time your out-of-the-stroller two year gets too close to any of the pieces of art.

Otherwise the Morse Museum is a great place to visit with stellar artwork from some great American artists.

Sincerely,

William

PS. If you happen to view the huge stained glass door panels from the August Heckscher House, made by L.C. Tiffany himself, the smaller finger smudges and snot on the lower left hand corner were not made by the artist. My apologies.

Could you please take your kids to a Buccaneers game or something. Please Bill?

Ben Stiller had more fun at his Night in the Museum! You'll have to go back when the guards are sleeping. Bet they didn't believe your story about the children's names. ( I didn't see the movie, but get the jist from the trailers) Sorry, William! L.W., children should be exposed to all venues! Leave William and his love of the arts alone!

William, I had no idea this man was from the Philly area and I've never seen any of this work. I guess he doesn't hang in the Art Museum because I don't remember seeing him.

I'll have to check out more, it's lovely.

It's good to see some men getting into the museums, most find them boring.

Sorry for the rules that don't allow pictures and strollers.

This museum needs to become a bit more enlightened. Or at least they need to realize that a double stroller will allow a single parent to take two children to a museum and simultaneously restrain them from damaging any artwork.

I thought parents only named their kids after French strippers or Biblical Characters... huhn.

Well, this is just sad. You should forward this to the museum; they should be ashamed of themselves.
LC Tiffany just didn't think of smudges and snot, or he would have worked in them, I'm sure.

Serious Brownie points to you for taking the boys to the museum, William. You know Stumpy and I adore old L C Tiffany and all his works and it's great to hear that some of the men will go along without being threatened with bodily harm.

Seriously, it's not so good that they're not supportive on the pushchair front but great that you didn't let that deter you.

Really? A no stroller rule? Clearly, children as rowdy as mine would be kicked out - if not contained appropriately, artwork is at serious risk!

Kudos to you for venturing out to such a lofty place with the kids in tow! Next time, hop a train to NY and try the Met - I used my double stroller there with no problems!

Kudos to you and your wife for attempting to instill an early appreciation of the arts in your children and certainly there are no finer artists after which to name your children than Louis Comfort Tiffany and Maxfield Parrish.

I will definitely put the Morse Museum on my places-to-visit list.

We enjoy Parrish's work as well. Suprisingly, we have a few prints hanging in our house with finger smudges and snot also.

I love blue. Thanks for the link. "No strollers" is a dumb rule. Are they hoping things will be destroyed and broken so they can collect on the insurance? Hmmm...

You named your kids after artists? Whoa. I tell Nathan that he is named after Nate Berkus...Oprah's hottie interior designer.

Happy new year to you and the family, William. I'm hoping 2007 is a great year for you. I'm only 18 minutes in here but it's feeling pretty good. :)

I remember taking my children to the art museum once when they were little toddlers. The people who follow you made me more nervous then my children.

The whole no stroller thing is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of.

Happy New Year to you and your family William!

A good link on this topic:

Moma allows cameras without flash but it seems that john q, museumgoer more times than not, forgets to turn off the flash or simply doesn't know how. periodic flashes can be aggravating to some, I would imagine. I'm conflicted. As a father of a 3 year old, I'm not immune to the icy and judgemental stares from the quieter, better behaved portion of society. It wasn't that long ago that I frequented galleries and museums regularly. Some places are sanctuaries. Some resemble Chuck E Cheese in content and atmosphere. I think there is a point when a child is behaviorally prepared for quiet places (some quicker than others) and can exercise judgement enough to respect those around them and their experiences. I'm just worried that parents are getting a bad rap because so many chronically insist on their "right" to take their kids anywhere for the sake of "enrichment" and the kids just aren't ready.

THE MORSE MUSEUM SUCKS!
THEY DONT CARE ABOUT YOU AT ALL! or YOUR OPINION. ALSO THERE DIRECTOR, LARRY, CALLS HIS OWN ODOPTED SON "BROWN CHILD"!! THE PLACE IS RUN BY OLD CONSERVATIVE FOOLS! THE ART WORLD SHOULD EMBRACE EVERYONE.... NOT BE RACIST or HOMOPHOBES. ITS TOO BAD ALL THAT ART HAS TO BE TRAPPED IN THERE WITH SUCH JERKS
