Lauren is now about 19 weeks pregnant. Next week we go in for an ultrasound. Yes, we will find out the sex of the baby. We have not decided if we will tell people the sex or not. Some people think we should not find out whether it is a boy or a girl. I know my dad wants to be surprised. It is tough keeping everyone happy.
But finding out the sex it will make things so much easier. If we find out we are having a boy, we will be in good shape. No need to really buy too much of anything. Maybe a toddler bed for Max but that is pretty much it. If we find out we are having a girl, we will need to get our act together and buy pink things, and dresses and hair ties and barrette's and dolls and tampons.
When Lauren was pregnant with Max we told people that we were having a boy. Of course the next question that came up was, “What are you going to name him?” Like most first timers we made the mistake of mentioning a few names that we picked only to hear how horrible those names were. Both my mom and Lauren’s mom were the biggest offenders. They would scrunch up their faces and say things like, “Oh? Well that is like that actor, who was in that movie and I really did not like him in that. That is a bad name.” Or “Oh I know 25 people that name and not one of them ever amounted to anything.”
I embellished slightly. Slightly.
So when we decided Maxfield would be his name we did not tell anyone. Also, there are so many people in my family siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins and there really are no duplicate names amongst us (unless it is a junior) that we protect names so no one else will steal it. A guy I work with suggested we name our kid “Doctor”. That way he/she will always have a leg up in life.
“Doctor Jones, your table is ready.”

Bill --- oops can I say names on here yet? or am I still on a 2 year Ban? just was checking....
Sir B of L&B.... Good Idea finding out the sex of the baby... I agree it makes life easier knowing what you are having so that you can start getting things ready around the house.... instead of gathering all neutral colors and clothes, etc... this way is much simplier.
Oh and I agree with that heavy set man you work with; name you kid Doctor. That way you can tell everyone you have a Doctor in your house.

Lol, I love the doctor idea.
Wow... 19 weeks already. You guys are about half-way there. Are you ready? Are you excited? Nervous?
Let us know how the ultrasound goes, whether you tell us the sex or not!
BHA HHAAAA. I love Doctor.
I like Jermasty for a boy. You know, like the Jacksons.
You people better tell us the sex, darnit. Don't make me drive 19 hours to kick some booty.
Kidding.
But, you will tell the internet the sex of the baby, right?
Congratulations! (a bit late) I didn't realize that you were expecting, but I would of know had I been more loyal at reading other blogs. No matter! I would want to know the sex too, but I would keep my name for the child secret too.
Might want to hold out on the tampon purchases for now.
I love this idea. I know you were talking about naming a boy, but just think of what you did for the women's movement everywhere with that statement.
If I have another girl, her name shall be President Miller.
LOL
the name game! People are so opionated especially the grandparents!
I love Max's name it is great!
Just make sure the name doesn't rhyme with private parts and you'll be good.
Remember that Seinfeld episode? The one with the woman whose name rhymed with a female body part? That was some good comedy.
And my word verification is "eurit". Teehee!
Haha! We have baby name stealers in our family too. I hate those dirty rats! Also gandmothers are allowed to tell you what names are good and what names are bad. It's in the rules of grandma book. Didn't you read that? BTW, with the second child there are going to be so many days that you could care a less if a boy wears pink and purple polka dots. I'm just sayin'.
Lois Lane
P.S. My guess is a baby brother is on the way for Max. :)
First, belated congratulations.
Second, we waited to find out the sex, which drove my wife crazy but was fun when we were literally surprised by what we got (we'd convinced ourselves it would be a boy...psyche!) But if I were to have another I'd want to find out. It would definitely make things a lot easier.
Third, why not make up completely ludicrous names to tell people when they ask for the name. This usually got people off our back when they asked. Names like Spyder, Major Tom, and Aspartame are particularly effective against grandparents...
Anything other Saddam or Osama is pretty safe for the next 20 years or so...
Although, I love your Doctor idea...

"...and tampons." Crack me up!
Johnna for a girl. Nobody has it, there is not repeating here. Come on, name her after uncle Lawnwhisperer. I do not recomend John for a Boy, but Johnna is cool.
Yah don't do what my parents almost did to my younger brother....(sorry Lawnwhisper, but it's similar to what you suggested)....If he had been a girl, they were going to name "her" Charlene...not to be pronounced as "SHAR" but "CHAR" like Charlie but with the "LENE" at the end. So that way "HER" nickname could be "Charlie" (same name as my Dad)
He's just lucky he ended up being a boy!
I vote ToadyJoe. It's unisex, it's cool, it's... everything you've ever wanted! ;)
And I say keep the baby name secret but tell us the gender immediately.
You asked... or, wait... did you? Bwahahahaha I'm practicing up for grannyhood.
I've always wondered if I would find out the sex of our second baby. We did with the first. I guess we will be in the same situation. We already have all this boy stuff so it would make it easier to know.
Please, please tell us!!!
Wow, 19 weeks already! And please tell us :) I'm impatient enough waiting to find out the sex when other people are pregnant, I could never not find out when it's my own. But I agree on waiting on the name. We saw people copying Rose's real name down in Lamaze class when we said it. Thieves.
Pink things for girls?!?! Don't do it Bill! Don't pigeon hole your child into a narrowed gender view of life. Put him/her in green and yellow. And have things like Emu's and Platypus' on their clothing so you can really mess with people's heads.
Hey, you should post the ultrasound video so we can all GUESS the sex. :) Besides, they are so cute!!!
*sigh*
have Lauren pee in a cup of draino and save yourself the money on the US.
Or do the pencil trick.
Either way-I like the name Kim. It's short, it's sweet...she'll love it.
Notice I said....SHE. It's time to get some more estrogen up in that house.
We wanted the surprise with our first, but n e e d e d to know -- INSTANTLY and IMMEDIATELY -- as soon as we found out I was pregnant with the second. Planning = good. Names are personal and the privilege of the parents ONLY. But do not remind me of that when my children procreate.
Slightly! You embellished a great deal! Never did this grandmom use either of those quotes! Maybe the "other" grandmom did. I like to se the truth in print. Max has a great name! I don't know another Maxfield, so that makes it a unique name. get the story straight, son!
I read somewhere that it was a buzz kill for people to know the sex and name before hand. Nobody got excited about the actual birth because they already knew all about the kid.
I found out for my second but didn't tell my bloggers until the big day- with pictures.
i also help a name contest but the only entries were 'bubba' and 'Randine'.
I love that "Doctor" it sounds more impressive than "Apple". LOL
We did the same thing... told people we were having a boy, but didn't tell anyone the name. The family was so annoyed with that! Not sure what we'll do next time... we'll wait til we get there I guess! Oh and we also did the ridiculous name thing... Ignacious was a favorite. "We'll call him Iggie!"
Awww. I didn't know your wife was pregnant! Congratulations to both of you. :)
we told a few close and supportive friends our name, but not family. Even so, my mother kept offering hideous suggestions, no matter how many times I told her to zip it! I think I finally hung up the phone on her (despite thinking that very rude) to get my point across. Or covered my ears and said "la la la" or something equally childish but brutally obvious. I just couldn't take it any more!
