PB&J

I made Maxfield a peanut butter and jelly sandwich the other day for lunch. I had flashbacks to when I was a kid.

How do you make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?

I put peanut butter on one piece of bread and the jelly on the other piece of bread and then put the two pieces together.

Growing up, I am pretty sure that is how my mom made them. But if Dad made PB&J he put the peanut butter on a piece of bread and then put the jelly on top of the peanut butter and then he would put a blank piece of bread on top. The jelly would not spread evenly across the bread and there would be big clumps of jelly, which would soak through the bread. I never liked when my dad made lunches.

Public service announcement: Check with your kids with how they like their PB&J. It may scar them for life.

My friend does the same thing your dad did and it makes me CRAZY. I don't understand the logic.

I put peanut butter on BOTH pieces of bread and then jelly on one those. This prevents the jelly from soaking into the bread. If you eat the sandwich right away, it doesn't matter. But if the sandwich is made in the morning and has to make it until lunchtime, soaking will occur. And as I kid I HATED that.

Two pieces of bread
Peanut butter first on both
Then jelly on both
Put 'em together
Cut in half
Eat it
Wash it down with chocolate milk
Yummy!

I have it for lunch nearly every day!

I don't worry about using PB&J to scar my kids -- I'm working on all sorts of new and fun ways to do that...

Oh, and the bread has to be totally fresh and soft otherwise, forget it.

Well, you gotta have a thin layer of peanut butter on both slices of bread (smooth only please) and then a layer of homemade strawberry jam or brown sugar on only one of the sides---mmmmm! But I agree with Kalki--you can't make it too soon--then the bread gets all gross, but it still works, but I still don't mind making it for lunch at work...
Brown sugar is the way to go people!
Regular white milk is a good thing to wash it down....but if you have chocolate milk--go for it!
Mmmmm--is it lunch time?

I will only eat mine one way: peanut butter on both pieces of bread, jelly on both pieces, and fold them in half. No cutting, no jelly soaking, and they are soooo good.

My kids like PB, B and J. Which is Peanut butter, butter and jelly!
But putting butter under the jelly saves for the jelly soaking through the bread!!!

Extra Crunchy on one piece of bread, homemade jam on the other, put together and cut crosswise! This last bit is very important. If you build it any other way it will taste the same, but if you cut it wrong you ruin the whole thing and have to feed it to the dog and start over. Crosswise only! That's corner to corner! Stacie

Ahh... the things we ponder when we become parents. I make PB&J the same way you do, unless we're doing it open-faced on toast. (Hey, you have to do something when you run out of Cap'n Crunch.)

Good idea--ask them if they even LIKE PB&J...I NEVER HAVE! :)

On our trip down the Alcan Highway from Alaska in 1986, in a "small" Toyota pickup loaded up with belongings, pulling a trailer, and a carseat between us, my husband and I ate PB&J. He knew I never ate it before and never have since.

He also knew how much I loved him and was willing to do to get us moved.

P.S. Although when I make tuna or other sandwiches I prefer to cut on the diagonal...and mom used to cut across! I AM SCARRED.

I make the sandwiches in the morning, and the Mrs. hates when the jelly soaks into the bread, so I put PB on one slice, then jelly on top of the PB, then a piece of wax paper to protect the other slice of bread. That makes my wife happy.
