Spanish Rooster

This morning, like most mornings, I was watching the Wiggles. The purple Wiggle told the red Wiggle that they were going to sing a song in Spanish. The Song they were going to sing was “Quack, Quack, Quack, Cock-a-doodle-doo.”

The song is, basically, about animal noises. They sang and I listened.

I do not speak or understand Spanish but I was shocked to hear the lyrics that sounded to me like “Quack quack quack, Ceek a deedle deedle dee.”

I was confused. "Ceek a deedle?" Do Spanish roosters sound different than other roosters? Spanish ducks make the same sound as, I guess, English ducks. So, why does the Spanish rooster sound so different?

I thought animal sounds, like Moo, Meow, Oink, Quack and, yes, Cock-a-doodle-doo, were all universal sounds.

Side note survey for those interested: As I contemplated the above post I realized that there are few different ways to make a dog sound. I usually use “Ruff, Ruff”. But there is also “woof woof”, “arf arf’ and I am sure a few others. What is your dog sound?

My dad was born and raised in Italy, so he says a rooster sound is (phonetically) "keek a ree kee"

Seriously.

(and my dog sound is "who's leg do I have to hump to get a dry martini"... although in hindsight maybe I watch too much Family Guy)

ooh! ooh! pick me! I make a dog sound in Spanish. First I roll my R for a long time (that's the Spanish part), which sounds like a growl, then a finish with a whooofh!whooofh!

My dog has an ear piercing short snap-of-a-yip ... if he wasn't so cute, I cut the vocal cords!

It depends on what he's trying to say!

Interestingly enough, in french, a dog's bark sounds like "ouaf, ouaf". Just thought you'd like to know.

We use "Ruff" because our dog actually makes the "fff" sound at the end of his bark.

I think Lauren likes a cuban rooster once in a while

I use "woof" since my dog actually sounds like that.

In Japanese, dogs say "wan wan" (pronounced like "Juan"), pigs say "buu buu", & frogs say "kero kero". I think every language has its animal noises. However, the crows in Japan really do sound different than the crows in the Midwest! Not sure about the other animals, though. I only talked to the crows. :)

I was pondering the same thing when I was also watching the show this morning.
And dogs say Roof roof!

I actually bark, which doesn't really have a phonetic spelling. It's very authentic-sounding -- can make real dogs respond even. Just another example of the endless glamour that is me, I know... ;)

My 4 year old has a stuffed dog she calls "Foofie" because when she was a baby I would do the baby waggle with the dog and go "woof woof!" and it turned to "foof foof!" and then he was called "Foof" and then she ended up calling him "Foofie".

As for the wiggles, my kids are 4 and 6 and still love them. So I've been hearing that song for about 6 years now.

It depends...am I "walking the dog" or is he just barking at a knock on the door?

Dude, William. I learned all that in 9th grade Spanish class. (My favorite was always the little chick noise: Pio! Pio! Oh, and the rooster crowing: Ki-kiri-ki! Ki-kiri-ki!) Geez. Everyone knows that onomatopoeia is multilingual! Read a book or sumthin'. Seriously.

Oh, and how awesome was The Office last night?! So, SO awesome! Pam walked on fire! But Angela will totally burn in hell for leaving Andy to float away...

You're all wrong.

Dogs make a sound like "woef woef".
Roosters: "kuukuhluhkuu"
Chickens: "Tock Tock Tock"
Pig: a really weird sound, like snoring (gnrr)
Cat: "Miauw"

Anyway, the point is that animal sounds are different from culture to culture. For example in french a rooster makes the noise "cocorico". I have spent alot of time in my home country of Italy and I can tell you that not only the noise for roosters but for all sorts of animals, including dogs, is different.
