Oh good God, he has his nose resting on it! LOL I like Sick Ada. It IS a cicada, right? We have those during the summer time here in Arizona. We had tons of them when I was growing up in Surprise. They buzzed so loudly, and when they would shed their skin they looked exactly like what you pictured. Sometimes my cousins would get the live ones, pull of their wings and feed them to my hamsters.
EW! Looks liek a piece of dog poop that came alive!
Call it NASTY ASS! Call it Blergh! Cause I just threw up a little looking at it. Call it from far away cause you really don't want to get that close to something so gross!
It's a cicada alright, at least it's shell. They make an awesome noise during the summer nights . . . but I wouldn't know since these days the sound of air conditioning drowns them out.
What the hell is that thing? How can you let your sweet child touch that nasty thing?? What is wrong with you?? Someone please pass me the hand sanitizer.
And I must speak up in eternal defense of cicadas to those of your readers who either don't know what it is, call it disgusting or want to kill it (which will be difficult). Cicadas come out once a year, some come out only once every 17 years, and then sing their little hearts out looking for what? Food? Fights? Danger? No, they're singing because they're looking for true love. A mate. Nature's sweethearts is what they are.
Will now slink off having revealed myself as the self-righteous geek that I am.
It reminds me of my childhood...ahhh the lovely scream that follows when your sister sees you've hung one on her shirt as you passed! We used to play with these all the time growing up in Ill, but here in Ct I don't think I've seen one.
You do have to be gentle with them or they will crumble.
Mel, I'm with you! If I only got lovin' every 17 years I'd sing my heart out and hope some kids didn't squash me. They're a nuisance I know but c'mon .... they're lookin' for love ...(in all the wrong places?)
Oh my! A tremendous chill went up my spine. Remember the year those things were everywhere & people thought Armageddon was coming? Odd the childhood memories that I carry around.
I'm not exactly sure how I found your blog....something about poop. Anyway, I was reading it while my kiddos were asleep, so I had the lights out. The picture of your new pet made me jump out of my skin! Ewww! The funniest part is...well, I think I'll just have to post about it on my own blog.
I'm a longer-ish reader of your blog and I clicked on this today saw this post and read the comments that it's a cicada and immediately felt bad because I killed two on my children's playhouse int eh backyard. How was I to know that they were harmless but deadly looking creatures???
I'm still amazed you let your son that close to it, but I'm squeamish like that.
Herman?
ReplyDeleteAchoo
ReplyDeleteBug Eyed Becky
ReplyDeleteName it? What the hell is it?
ReplyDeleteStep on it! Kill it, now!
ReplyDeleteI'm with scifi dad. What the hell? If you have to name it, I'd go with RIP. And then I'd make it so. But that's just me.
ReplyDeleteSick Ada??? (hehe couldn't resist)
ReplyDeleteOMG. I never knew what one of those looked like, and now I am kind of horrified.

AAAAAH!
Fred or George, always Fred or George for each succession of 'pets' that way you're always right.
ReplyDeleteIf it turns out to be a girl then Fred and George still works, short for Fredrika and Georgina.
Cheers
It's not a cicada. We have those in Minnesota. If I lived somewhere where I could run into that bug, I'd be forced to move.
ReplyDeleteIt's a cicada alright, at least it's shell. They make an awesome noise during the summer nights . . . but I wouldn't know since these days the sound of air conditioning drowns them out.
ReplyDeleteName it Fredo.
Oh, that is disgusting. Is your son actually nuzzling it in that last picture? Man, I'm gonna have nightmares now.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a Lloyd to me.
ReplyDeleteHow about Krull?
ReplyDeleteha.
What the hell is that thing? How can you let your sweet child touch that nasty thing?? What is wrong with you?? Someone please pass me the hand sanitizer.
ReplyDeleteIs that a locust shell? Maybe it's a girl named Shelly. Kinda looks like this girl I use to know who had the same name.
ReplyDeleteSAMMY!
ReplyDeleteSloth
ReplyDeletewhat the hell is that?
ReplyDeleteEeeeewwwwwww!
ReplyDeleteFirst tell me what it is!
ReplyDeleteGah.
Wrong on so many levels...so wrong. Bugs should be banished.
ReplyDeleteCat Food?
ReplyDeleteWhat about "I'm Being Flushed Tonight"? GOOD GRIEF!
ReplyDeletePinchy
ReplyDeleteSicky Shell. As in cicada shell, which is what it is.

It's name should be squash me. What the hell is that thing? It almost looks alien.
ReplyDeleteblaghurg, in the year of cicadas, my kids brought me gallon sized zip locks full of exoskeletons and called them "a collection."
ReplyDeleteI saw Andy Warhol's soup cans at the National Art Museum yesterday, made me think of you.

ReplyDeleteI am with scifi dad - what in the name of all thats good is it?!?!!??!
ReplyDeleteSo it's dead then? It's a Cicado that sings every 17 years?
ReplyDelete- they must have been really bad in a past life to come back as one of those.
Poor guy.
Do you think he might be responsible for the crop circle in you back garden?
ReplyDelete(I love the noise cicadas make. It reminds me of Rome last August!)
Marvin? I'm not so sure i would want it as a pet.
ReplyDeleteI have something smiley for you on my blog
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a hermit crab to me, out of his shell. Call him "Gay" because he came out of his closet. Another name would be "Ugly Betty". Momo9
ReplyDeleteI'm a little biased, but bug eyed Becky is out of the question.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous can shove it.

ReplyDeleteThis has nothing to do with the bug, but your son is looking so grown up!
ReplyDeleteI've got nothing here.
ReplyDeletebut, if it is a cicada... then I'm jealous cause their "song" is wicked awesome!
That scares the CRAP out of me.

ReplyDeleteMy 5-year-old son collects JARS of these things from our backyard...much to the chargin (and disgust) of my wife.
That's a cicada? Eww.
