Mood Changer

We went to see the OB/GYN on Wednesday. We are supposed to see each of the doctors at this practice. Being a man, I get confused sometimes and forget which doctor we are going to see. Lauren suggested a while ago that we just call them all Dr. Vincent Van Gina (not to their faces of course).

While we were waiting in the exam room Max was having a grand old time playing with the stirrups. Moving them from the up position to the down position. I was surprised and slightly amused at the fact that the stirrups had covers on them. Covers similar to a golf club cover, but only these looked like little Crown Royal bags. I looked closer to see the printing on them. Ortho Tri Cyclen, a birth control pill, was written in yellow on both sides of the cover. Those drug manufacturers really know how to advertise. Pure Genius.

We waited for a really long time and I was starting to get pissed. I hate waiting. We were trying to keep Max from touching anything else in the room ( I mean sure he can play with the stirrups and get some kind of fungus but..well you know). Usually when we go to the doctors I grab a tongue depressor from the glass jar with the metal top and hand it to Max and he is entertained for a while. They don't have tongue depressors in an OB/GYN office, and if they did I would be somewhat worried. They did have these giant Q-tips but I did not think it would be cool for Max to play with them, besides I do not think they were for cleaning out ears.

Max was getting antsy and I was getting more and more irritated that they were keeping us waiting. Finally Dr. Van Gina comes in and apologizes about the wait, but I didn't want to hear it. I wanted to be bitter. Lauren was somewhat annoyed as well. It took the doctor about two seconds for introductions when she whips out Doppler machine and has it on Lauren's belly.

We all heard the quick thump-thump-thump coming from the small speaker. Max started smiling. Lauren started smiling. I started smiling.

Nothing can change a bad mood quicker than hearing your unborn baby's heartbeat

I had at least 3 sarcastic remarks all ready to go, but how can I follow that conclusion with sarcasm?

OKAY. So I guess you know now to take stuff to amuse Max in the future. Pitty more OBs aren't more child centered ... funny how that is --

So exciting! I know that it changed my mood just reading about it... I can only guess how much better it was in person.
So now I'm curious... don't know if this is a taboo question or not, but how far along are you guys?

Amen. :)

We thought it sounded kinda like a train... either way, a truly lovely sound.

That is the best sound in the world! Take a dictating machine or some sort of recorder next time you go.

Awww. So does Max know what he was hearing? Did you tell him he is going to be a big brother?

Congrats!! I remember being on cloud nine for days when we first heard our baby's heartbeat. And we spent the rest of the day imitating it back and forth to each other!

If I ever go back and finish my nursing degree, I want to either work NICU/OB at the hospital or work in an OB office. Gotta be around those babies!!

Congrats! So happy for your family... oh, and only 7 more to go after this, right? Hee. :)

And my hub is 2nd of 10 so I get that a lot. I had to say it to someone else... :)

I recorded Daughter #1s heatbeat when I was PG and listening to it STILL makes me smile.

I would imagine that would be the ultimate mood changer.

Giant Q-tip...heh heh heh....you never know, some people DO have really big ears!

True that. I went to an OB once who had oven mitts on the stirrups.

Aaaw, William, you big softie, you! Eeeeeexcellent...

When TGIM used to accompany me to the OB/GYN, he absolutely COULD NOT stop himself from touching every damn thing in the room. It was like having a child in there with me. But WAY worse. At least a two-year-old has an excuse. Because if they would leave us in an examining room alone for more than two minutes he'd start sifting through drawers, pulling out speculums and shoving them in my face, opening and shutting them while saying, "Rawr!" Or picking up the tube of KY Jelly off the tray and saying, "Hey, Cat, check it out!" then pulling on a glove with an exaggerated snap and shouting, "Spread 'em!" And let's face it... I was pregnant, and hormonal, and deathly afraid a nurse would walk in, but mostly just pissed at the doctor for leaving me alone for so long with such a freaking moron!

I wish I would have had the Zen moment with the heartbeat. That sounds nice...

(PHEW! Sorry about the rant. I must have repressed!)

Here's another Mood Changer for you.

Laying in bed, getting cozy with the wife. Whispering sweet nothings in her ear. Things starting to heat up, and I'm thinking that I'm going to get lucky. My 4 year old barges through the door, crying, he had a nightmare. The wife throws him in our bed. Mood Changed.

The best sound ever. Until the first cry after delivery replaces it. I still remember both of those sounds SO well. I'm so happy for you guys :)

lawnwhisperer's comment makes me laugh. It is fascinating how God has designed us so that the sound of our child's needy voice can throw a bucket of ice water on even the "hottest" moment.

So wonderful! Nice to have mood changers like that!

That is totally the best sound EVAH! Yeah I took little Nate to the OB/GYN for my annual exam the other week. That was interesting. Fortunately he sat on the floor eating his cheerios without making a mess. He kept crawling over and banging on the lid of the trash can marked "BioHazard Material". I was afraid of what he might catch but I gave up trying to stop him.
