Every now and then Maxfiled and I will go to Books A Million (Books A Million is much like Barnes and Noble but not as upscale). Books A Million has the Thomas the Tank Engine railroad play set that keeps Max busy while I get to read comic books or magazines. They also have a large train like platform that Max can play on.
On our last three visits (no Lauren) to the bookstore Max has used this opportunity to have an explosive diaper. I do not manage well with changing him public restrooms. It always is an adventure, with trying to tie him down to the changing station, keeping his hands out of the urinal, preventing him from eating the blue urinal blocks, as well as getting him properly cleaned.
I don’t know what it is about Books A Million that loosens Max’s insides, but after the third time, I started to think maybe it was the air inside the store.
Last night Lauren, Max and I went to the Library. Our library system in Orlando is very cool. You can borrow video games, CDs, DVDs, complete seasons of TV shows, oh and books. There was a lot to look over since this was our first trip to the library.
We were not there longer than 20 minutes when Max had another explosion.
It’s books. It has got to be books. Not just one or two books, but if he is surrounded by thousands and thousands of books. I don’t know if he gets nervous around so much reading material or if he has picked up on the fact that I bring a book into the bathroom at home and he has subconsciously linked books to “going”.
I hope he gets over this by the time he starts school. He may have some serious problems working on his term papers.

I do know that it seems to be a boy thing cause when we would go away with my son that's when he would use that opportunity to fill a diaper. Of course then you're dealt with what's worse-his poopy diaper or the bathroom in which ya gotta change 'em in?
Oh that's funny--he links books with poop! Teehee! Maybe feed him cheese before you go to the library next?
(my word verification is
qlbpqpoop)
For our kids, it's the doctor's office and where we get our hair cut. Never fails, at least one of them will poop at either of those places. Maybe they get bored with the waiting and decide to "do something"... I dunno...
That's so funny!
He's just getting started on the whole reading while pooping thing. But for now, he has it a little backwards!
Good on ya for changing the butts! perhaps you should invest in toddler sized blinders for visits to booky establishments... just a thought.
My Husband would likely pack the stink up in the car and drive it home for me to change. He's 'not good with poop' he says...
and I am?!?!
Okay, I am about to share TMI, especially since I don't usually post on your site. I used to have this same problem...me, not my kid. Every time I went to a bookstore the urge to go #2 hit REALLY hard. In fact, I had to stop going to the bookstore after eating dinner...it was bad news for everyone.
My grandmother always had to poop whenever she would look at real estate.
I suppose it has to do with what excites you!
LOL
Nobody manages well with changing explosive diapers in public restrooms. Or anywhere else for that matter.
I think it's a man thing... the same genetic predispostion that causes my father to sit in the bathroom forever while he reads a paperback.
*Please delete my last comment. I don't know how that happened. Really.*
I think you're on to something with your reading literature/crapper theory.
Unfortunately, I normally read my mail in the bathroom. If your theory hold true, it looks like my Lauren will never know the joy of working for the U.S. postal service.
LOL!! That's a funny story... save that one for when he turns 16 and his girl friend comes by for dinner, lol
You know, that used to happen to me everytime I went to the library. I would get severe stomach cramping. I thought it must have had something to do with the smell of books. I went to the library every other week, too, so it wasn't just a coincidence!
Maybe he's destined to be a genius, and the presence of so much knowledge in one place makes him so excited that he loses all control of his bowels?
I like Ern's suggestion, since that's what I was basically going to say.
The bathroom trigger for us is Target, but only when we're at the total opposite end of the store from the bathrooms.
I think this is a predisposition in most humans. So many people I know have magazines, books, etc. in their bathrooms. Not me I mean who wants to sit in there with that and read? Not ME! I'm an in and out kind of pooper!
Whether it's the smell, the air, the books, the excitement, the knowledge...what ever, something tells me that cute little Max will have one of those magazine holders in his bathroom as well.
I'm delurking to say....you now have your answer to potty training. Line the walls with books like the bookstore and the library and you're good to go....errrr...I mean he's good to go!! ;-) Cute stories...cute kid...nice blog and I can dance to it...I give it a thumbs up! :-)
as always, you made me laugh outloud! Poor Maxfield!
I do miss the libraries in Orlando...they were awesome. Here in CT I don't think people believe in reading much because the libraries here are so tiny I don't think you can fit more than 5 people at a time including the librarian, and I don't think they have any books that have been published since the late 1800's. I soooo miss a good library!
This could be a whole 'nother kind of educational "special need." He'll have an IEP that calls for spare undies and Immodium. Very curious. If I didn't know better, I'd think he was the kind of kid who was raised by people who play "I'm not touching you!" in bed.
That's pretty funny. So far Nate rarely poops in public. Usually only when he is on the floor playing at home. But I do remember when he was littler changing some nasty ones on those flip down tables in public bathrooms. YUK!
Little pictures, he sees you and your book running for the potty, why not?! LOL! Have a good weekend!
Lois Lane
I've actually heard it said that bookstores have a laxative effect on many people...
Definitely time to get him some of those bathroom reader books.
And I do not miss the diaper days.
Ugh.
