Genetics

I took a genetics class in 10th grade. We covered eye color with Big B and little b. We discussed dominant traits and recessive traits. Attached ear lobes or dangling ear lobes. Tongue curler or not a tongue curler. There were others.

I am curious to find out about whether the following is a genetic trait.

Okay reader, imagine yourself on the phone. An imaginary phone call if you will. Hold you hand up to your head like you were on the phone.

Are you a "pinky to the mouth, thumb to the ear" imaginary phone person? Or are you the "closed fist to the cheek" imaginary phone person?

"pinky to mouth, thumb to ear"...I never knew that people could do it differently from that...a closed fist? that just seems strange...(ps, this is my first time using "word verification" I always get nervous that I'll see it incorrectly or something!)

  2. I'm a closed fist fer sure! Here's my theory, It's not genetics, but situational influence. I grew up around boys..16 rough and tumble boys who would sooner cut their pinky's off than have them stick out even for an imaginary phone, and with 16 boys in the neighborhood, there were alot of closed fists thrown. Myself included.
(ps lehighmary, I get nervous too..I am pretty sure I have dyslexia so It freaks me out totally!) Stacie

  3. Ahhh, Pinky to the Mouth, thumb to the ear...
LOL, I had to think if I ever saw people do it the other way, I don't think I have... Strange!

  4. I'm a fist person.

Not sure if it's genetics or the fact that I've got a lot of pent up aggression from the last few days.

If it's genetic if is definitely a dominant trait.

    What an intriguing quandry...

  5. Fascinating question. I'm pinky to mouth, thumb to ear. I never really knew that about myself until you asked. Thanks.

  8. I took a genetics class in college (got the highest grade the teacher has *EVER* given ~ I LOVED that stuff!!)....*ahem* anyway, back to your question.

I am a "closed fist to cheek" person and I just asked The Hubs and he too did the "closed fist to cheek" thing.

    What does this mean?!?!?

  9. Pinky to mouth, thumb to ear, most def. Closed fist to cheek is for babies.

  10. Closed fist. But perhaps its better if we don't explore this further, ,aybe we should have a "don't ask" "don't tell" policy for the phone issue. We don't want to upset those pinky and thumb freaks.

I don't think I know anyone who does the other, with just a fist at the side of the face....weird...definitely genetic, like being able to wiggle your ears--I can wiggle my ears, can you?

You do realize that in American Sign Language, the official way to say telephone is with the pinky to the mouth and thumb to the ear, eh?

  17. Hooboy... I fit into a whole new category Bill. My thumb is under my jaw, my index finger is near my ear and my pinky finger is on my mouth. It falls into both! It's a fist but there's all these fingers in the way.
I always knew I was a freak. Thanks for the confirmation.

How can I fake hang up on my wife? I am not concerned with how I'm holding the phone, I just want her to stop bitching. How, somebody tell me how to I hang up.

  21. I liked him first. :)

Pinky/thumb... putting a fist to my face would be dangerous.

What I want to know is how many people read "no_newz" and tried to figure out how to hold her phone. That was WAY to complicated for me...

  22. I think pinky/thumb is a relatively new development. Like the internet. I used to do fist, but for several years now, I've done pinky/thumb.

I tried it Lois Lane's way. That's just kinky.
